What do we Know about Birth?

Mary Lou Longeway, RN, MS

Birth is a powerful and unique experience for every family. There are no two births that are alike. For those people who see birth as a natural process, no matter how much technical help they accept, they themselves remain ultimately responsible for the birth experience. Any birth that is carried out with this awareness and understanding, with the focus on the people rather than on the technology, becomes a special birth experience. This is true whether the setting takes place in the parents' home, a hospital or a birth center.

Birth is an integral part of our lives, and it should be a joyous process through which we can maintain a sense of dignity and self-determination. Birth is based on the conviction that since parents are going to make choices for themselves in any event, they should be given the fullest information, education and tools for the task they are undertaking. Information is the key to giving birth with the greatest safety and emotional and spiritual fulfillment for the baby, mother and everyone present.
